THE 'FIRE' IN RAJESH ROSHAN

Uncle to actor Hrithik Roshan and brother to diretor Rakesh Roshan, entertainment correspondent Supriya Davda talks with music director of Kites, Rajesh Roshan

BY SUPRIYA DAVDA | MAY 10, 2010

He rose to fame with the score for 'Julie' winning the Filmfare Best Music Director Award. He's the first music director who got teh Big B, Amitabh Bachchan to sing. He composes music for all of his brother Rakesh Roshan's films, 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai', 'Koi... Mil Gaya' and 'Krrish'.

Having been in the industry for about 40 years, Rajesh Roshan has created some soulful tunes like "Jab koi baat bigad jaye" and "Dil kya kare". However, veteran music composer Rajesh Roshan says he is thrilled to have got a chance to sing for the first time in the movie 'Kites'.

"Although tried and tested before I failed miserably, but I am happy with the way "Fire" has turned out" said the Roshan on a phone call from Mumbai. "I am hoping to sing more now in the coming years to come."

Having sung the song "Fire" along with composer Vishal Dadlani in the movie that stars his nephew Hrithik Roshan, who also so happens to be making his singing debut in the much-talked-about film. "Hrithik was humming the song "Kites in the Sky" and Anurag persuaded him to sing the song, he said it wasn’t his cup of tea, but once he started recording it, it turned out to be enjoyable for him and in the end we managed to create a beautiful number".

Rajesh Roshan claims "Fire" was the most difficult song to compose in the album.

"Fire was the most difficult and challenging track. It has the effects of trance music, which is not easy to create and that is something I haven't indulged in before. Hrithik wanted the initial part of the song to be slow then spell into trance and we needed to create that bridge. And it was creating that very bridge that was difficult. Also, we were not getting the right voices to sing the track. So eventually I decided to step in myself and sing the starting part," he said.

The soundtrack of 'Kites' includes six originals and three remixes. It's quite different from Rajesh Roshan's earlier movies 'Julie', 'Yaarana', 'Karan Arjun' and 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai'.

"I had people like Rakesh, Hrithik and Anurag with me who have a musical ear. They used to pick the right tunes unanimously and that's the most essential thing. It’s a democratic production and we are all open to suggestions’’ he said. "Kites has a global appeal, and hence it was key that the music must be understood by all in the world."

'Kites' is about an Indian man's affair with a Latin woman and their predicament as they don't understand each other's language, is being made in Hindi and English. The English version has been reworked by well-known Hollywood director Brett Ratner. Also starring Mexican actress Barbara Mori and Kangana Ranaut, it will be released May 21 in over 60 countries.

Asked why he works for his brother's films only nowadays, he said: "I'm very comfortable working with my brother. There are no ego hassles. Also, we all strive for perfection; we share the same goal so there is no compromise on creativity. I found my niche while working with Rakesh."

"Another reason is that I've been giving music for the past almost four decades and so I have to reduce my work now. Also, I haven't been offered anything very interesting from others. And there must be that common ground to like I have with my brother. There are no barriers. Since I'm comfortable with my family, I work with them but it's not that I'm averse to others, my doors are always open and would love to create music for other films too. "

'Kites' is set to release in cinemas on May 21.
