ONE THIRD OF SHANKAR EHSAAN LOY

Supriya Davda speaks to one third of the rhythmic rockstar Ehsaan Noorani, about their latest release as a trio My Name is Khan

BY SUPRIYA DAVDA | JAN 18, 2010

Q. Are you pleased with the response you have received for the music of 'My Name is Khan'?
A.
Absolutely, the music here in India seems to be doing really well. It’s an unconventional album; it’s simple, yet melodious. And simple melodies work.

Q. In the generation whereby item numbers and the incorporation of other genres like hip-hop have been used in Hindi films what made you create such harmonious and tuneful songs?
A.
As far as 'My Name is Khan' is concerned the script required such soulful music, we always present a variety of music to our audiences. We have 'Karthik Calling Karthik' whereby you’ll see more peppy numbers, but if the script requires melodies like those in 'My Name is Khan', then Shankar, Loy and I are willing to experiment.

Q. Usually composers who work in a team tend to disagree on many things and end up splitting up as a group, you three have been working well together, what’s the secret?
A.
Well we’ve been working together for 13 years now. Its fun and we work well as a team. We’d like to think we create great music as a trio. We give each other space too so its not as if we’re in each other pockets constantly. We have great fun together.

Q. How do the three of you conjure up ideas about songs?
A
. Especially since song and dance is an integral part of the films that are made in India. Luckily the people we work with know their mind and the kind of film they want to make, the script is king. We just take the flavour of the script and work with what we have.

Q. Is it true that your studio was broken into and music for 'My Name is Khan' was taken?
A.
Yes it’s true that the studio was broken into, but luckily only the basics were taken. Our computers and hard drive were not taken.

Q. What’s next for the trio?
A.
Well we have 'Kathik Calling Karthik' releasing soon. The music has been released and been received well.

Q. A lot of your fellow colleagues within the film industry are apart of  social networking sites such as twitter, are you on any of these sites and do you feel it’s a beneficial platform  to promote your work?
A.
I’m not on twitter as yet, but I do have a facebook account and I do try and interact with fans as much as I can. I get a lot of friend requests but it’s difficult to accept all of them. But yes most definitely it is a platform to interact with fans and it’s nice for them to know what you’re up to.

The soundtrack to 'My Name is Khan' is available to buy on Amazon.com
