LONDON ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL MOVIE SCREENINGS

Only with the end of this week for London's Film Festival to finish, Tongues on Fire are screening a double bill of Playing the Taar and Made in Pakistan as well the film An Act of Terror today

BY REMMA KAUR | MAR 11, 2010

Double Bill - Playing the Taar Made in Pakistan at 6pm
Playing the Taar is the first feature-length film by 26-year-old Afghan female director, Roya Sadat. Ay Nabaat is a 17 year-old girl from the Turkmen ethnic minority in Afghanistan. She has been weaving carpets at her home since her childhood. Her entire life is interlocked to carpet strings and colours. Her father is involved in an old and bloody hostility with another ethnic group which has lasted for years. In order to end this hostility, he decides to marry Ay Nabaat to a man who already has three wives. This haunting tale is about a 17-year-old carpet weaving girl from the Turkmen ethnic minority who is married off to an older man with four wives against her will and is a shocking indictment on the treatment of women in the country.

Made in Pakistan follows the lives of four Pakistani individuals in Lahore in a documentary that defies the stereotype of Pakistanis prevalent in the western media today. Tara, Mohsin, Rabia and Waleed devote their energies towards the progress of Pakistan. In a country where fashion, politics, religion, debate and tradition intermingle and where one definition of an Islamic state no longer holds true, these individuals represent the multifaceted nature of Pakistan. this acclaimed documentary looks to present a multifaceted country and its burgeoning culture. It questions Pakistan’s myopic definition through ‘terrorism’, ‘fundamentalism and ‘extremism’. It explores the country through four individuals who defy the prevailing stereotype of Pakistanis in the western media and put their energies towards the progress of Pakistan.
