Lost is over after the finale was broadcast simultaneously to an audience of millions this morning but can anyone explain what's been going on?

After six series, many people's grasp of what's actually been going on is not much clearer, as no overall theory has emerged to explain the bizarre lives of the survivors of Flight 815.
Many of the theories involve Christianity and whether the island was in fact a kind of limbo where the passengers were already dead but whose souls were battling with the forces of heaven and hell to determine their final destination.
Some of the threads in the storylines appeared to back up this kind of theory, not least factors such as the name of Jack's father (Christian Shepherd) and the healing hands of Jack the surgeon helping the paralysed man (Locke) to walk.
However, dozens, if not hundreds, more theories have been spawned by the sprawling series.
