5 DAYS IN MAY

5 Days in May introduces an international body of work to Southbank Centre’s Dance and Performance programme that challenges traditional boundaries of the art form

BY REMMA KAUR | APR 15, 2010

5 days in May
Wednesday 5 – Sunday 9 May 2010
Southbank Centre

From the staging of a live performance lottery in Matsune and Subal’s Win for U to late night Springtime Cabaret with Marcella Puppini and her Forget-Me-Not Orchestra and an unflinching one-man performance about the brutalising effects of colonisation, displacement and war. Artists in this new series include Pina Bausch’s former dramaturge, Raimund Hogue, up-and-coming multimedia artist/choreographer Rachid Ouramdane, Miguel Pereira who presents his London premiere of Doo with fellow performer Bernardo Fernando and a first time collaboration between two internationally influential choreographers Mathilde Monnier and La Ribot in their UK premiere of Gustavia.

Accompanying performances, workshops, post-show talks and debate, are a number of events which explore new formats of audience and artist engagement. From Raimund Hogue’s performance lecture to Michikazu Matsune and David Subal’s playful live lottery – which blurs the line between art and entertainment and finishing with a Tea Party in the Queen Elizabeth Hall foyer, 5 Days in May offers audiences the chance to experience dance as it embraces visual arts, text and spoken word and moves towards performance, live art, installation and even comedy.

On Thursday 6 May A Meeting Place invites eight internationally established artists to respond creatively in a unique performance event to the following questions. What is most important in your dance practice right now? What do you see happening in the UK and on the international dance and performance scene at this time? Lea Anderson, Siobhan Davies, Southbank Centre Artist in Residence Gauri Sharma Tripathi, Candoco’s Stine Nilsen and Pedro Machado, Thomas Lehmen (Germany), Boris Charmatz (France) and Eszter Salamon (Hungary) team up to present an evening of artistic provocation.

Nicky Molloy, Head of Dance and Performance said: “Dance is a powerful art form currently undertaking fascinating developments. 5 Days in May is an invitation to a programme of international work for the dance curious. Diverse but firmly grounded in movement and the body it introduces acclaimed dance artists and choreographers to London for the first time, allowing audiences to engage with different dance aesthetics and languages.”
